Divers Give Back- Typhoon Haiyan Local Fishermen Relief Project
Super-typhoon Haiyan (known locally in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda) devastated the Philippines on November 8, 2013 with gusts of wind that reached 379km/h (235 mph), waves as high as 15m (45ft), and more than 400mm (15.75 inches) of rain. Many of the victims of Haiyan were from small fishing communities where fishers rely on basic gear to feed their families and earn a living. Divers Give Back wanted to do our part to help the fishing communities in the Philippines affected by super-typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda). Many of the victims of Haiyan are from small fishing communities where fishers rely on basic gear to feed their families and earn a living.
Divers Give Back was a non-profit project focused on supporting fishing communities in the Philippines. With the help of Yolanda Shelter Support and through generous donations from the public, Divers Give Back sponsored ten fishing families from the village of Tanauan (south of Tacloban). We collected used fishing gear and purchased additional fishing equipment through monetary donations. By communicating directly with fishers, we were able to pinpoint their most important needs to prioritize our efforts. In February 2014, the fishers of Tanauan received fishing nets, floaters, lead sinkers, nylon, rope, and fishing needles... all they need to get back to fishing again. |
