Marxan Training CoursesMarxan and extensions of the software are decision-support tools that assist conservationist in the planning and design of protected area networks. When integrated with robust biological and socioeconomic data, and embedded within a broader Systematic Conservation Planning process, these tools can identify priority conservation areas in a transparent, efficient, and equitable manner.
Technical and non-technical training courses on Marxan, Marxan with Zones, and Marxan Connect are offered in partnership with PacMARA. The courses are flexible and can be tailored to the specific needs of the client. They can be taught in-person or virtually, and are available in English, Spanish, and French. |
Marxan
Marxan is the most widely utilized decision support software for conservation planning in the world. It was developed by Ian Ball and Hugh Possingham from the University of Queensland. This decision-support tool supports spatial prioritization by producing transparent and repeatable results that provide multiple protected area configuration options.
Introduction to Marxan is a 2-3 day training course offered through PacMARA. Through a series of conservation planning exercises, the hands-on technical course provides participants the basic knowledge and skills to use the Marxan sofware. For more information about the course, please visit the PacMARA website.

Marxan with Zones
Marxan with Zones is an extension of Marxan, developed by Mathew Watts, Ian Ball, and Hugh Possingham from the University of Queensland in Australia. The advanced software provides transparent and repeatable outputs that help address complex spatial planning problems. Unlike earlier versions of Marxan, Marxan with Zones allows users to allocate different management zones, each of which can be assigned objectives and constraints as defined by the user. This added functionality can support decision-making for multiple-use zoning plans to simultaneously meet ecological, social, and economic objectives.
Introduction to Marxan with Zones is a 2-3 day training course offered through PacMARA. The course provides participants with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to use the Marxan with Zones software to design a multiple use zone plan for a marine or terrestrial environment. For more information about the course, please visit the PacMARA website.
